Time is ripe to alter Man Utd's system - the manager declares.

Man Utd squad members in training
Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was among seven senior players absent from the holiday period triumph against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim contends that altering Manchester United's formation due to public pressure would have been "his demise" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his usual three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and chose to deploy an standard four-man defense shielded by two defensive midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively transformed into a six-man defensive block in the final minutes as his squad clung on for a victory - securing just their second-ever clean sheet of the season.

Despite he once memorably remarked that even the highest authority could pressure him to tweak his system, Amorim asserts the option to utilize different formations has always been part of his strategy.

However, he stresses he could solely alter the tactics when his team were faring sufficiently well - lest it would look as if he was giving in to outside noise.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized maybe I don't have the personnel to play well in that formation, but it was the commencement of a process," he commented.

"The goal was to establish an philosophy. Currently is a distinct juncture. We are missing a lot of personnel, and we have to adapt, so they see the reason we are switching things up.

"The change isn't because of the pressure of the media, or the supporters.

"Whenever the press discuss changing the system constantly, I can't make a change because the players will believe I'm altering things because of you and I believe that is the end for the manager.

"Once we are getting results in our preferred setup, then is the right time to adapt.

"We will develop into a better squad because when all the personnel are back, we are not intending to use a back three all the time."

Availability Challenges Continue

With just two victories in their last eight outings before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is right to say his team have been playing well.

He is, though, working with a depleted roster, with seven senior players already confirmed absent for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves match, despite the fact he is understood to be pressing his boss to let him to return following his hamstring injury.

"Fernandes is already telling me he has to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. Definitely not. You can quote me on that."

The Captain's Leadership Is Unwavering

However, the Portuguese star will probably continue to be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable stars watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to continue providing insight.

"He is a leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly speaking. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has flaws sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of strengths. Even after he recovers, he goes to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a lot of aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Injured Players

Although the specific date for Fernandes' comeback - and that of fellow unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, before the conclusion of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
