Since my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London. We reached the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners. Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope. He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I ought to seek a role with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa. A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate. In typical New York fashion – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London. I was employed there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations. We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition. Critically, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful. What is the Kindest Gesture a Unknown Person Has Shown for You?
