The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas advertisement made via generative AI following receiving widespread public disapproval.

The brief spot was created with the help of generative AI clips and was initially published on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, viewers on social media criticized the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several described it as "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This moment is an important lesson as we examine the effective use of AI," stated a statement from the company.

The commercial was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed various scenarios that often go badly over the holidays, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI-Generated Ads

Adverts that incorporate AI tools have emerged as a growing trend among large companies, especially for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly released consecutive AI-generated holiday commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Because videos produced using generative AI are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also provoked worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some commenters noting it might negatively impact work for camera crews.

Defense from the Production Company

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

Bridge claimed, the creation required "over a month and a half" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then crafted in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI trick," she commented. "The result was a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the reception for other AI-assisted campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.

However, several companies have also received criticism for employing the technique in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The situation underscores the ongoing conversation within the advertising and creative sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and audience reception.
