RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
