Roughly fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.

Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then discovered many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely human blood.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for information.

A senior political figure commented the incident left him without words and required to be addressed quickly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
